Vertically integrated steel and vanadium producer EVRAZ Highveld Steel and Vanadium Limited (EVRAZ Highveld) is South Africa’s second largest steel maker and the primary producer of medium and heavy structural sections. Steel and vanadium slag are produced at the integrated steelworks situated in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga with ore for the steelworks obtained from the Mapochs Mine in the Roossenekal area, Limpopo.
In 2014 it produced 159 thousand tonnes of plate, 134 thousand tonnes of coil, 214 thousand tonnes of sections and 56 thousand tonnes of vanadium slag.
The steel works are comprised of the iron plant, steel plant, steel mills and supporting services such as engineering, transport and risk control. At the iron making operation Mapochs sourced lumpy ore greater than 6mm is processed into pig iron and vanadium slag. At the steel plant the pig iron is converted into slabs, blooms and billets. The slabs are then rolled into coil and plate at the flat products mill and the blooms and billets are rolled into structural sections at the structural mill.
Steel: Steel is converted into a variety of hot rolled steel products and continuously cast steel products, namely:
EVRAZ Highveld’s profile steel products are universal columns, parallel flanged beams, channels, angles, rounds and billets.
