Evraz Group S.A. (LSE: EVR), one of the leading vertically integrated steel production and mining businesses with operations mainly in Russia, announces that on September 15, 2005, it successfully completed the first hot complex trials of the unique doublestream continuous caster at the site of OAO West Siberian Iron and Steel Plant (“ZapSib”) which has annual slab capacity of 2.5m tonnes.
In advance of the trials, the Group not only built and assembled the new caster, but also provided a full training programme for its employees at other Evraz plants where this technology has already been adopted. Similar training programmes also took place with machines at the Austrian supplier of the equipment. This new technology will be phased in over the next month.

“The successful trial of the slab concaster, and its subsequent commissioning, is an important first step in the modernisation programme at ZapSib, which will result in a significant increase in the volume of steel production at the plant and diversify its product mix.”
