According to The International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) 2007 world crude steel output reached 1,344.3 million metric tons. This is an increase of 7.5% on 2006. The total represents the highest level of crude steel output in history. 2007 is also the fourth consecutive year in which crude steel output has been above 1 billion tons.

2007 production is 68.3% above the total production for the world ten years ago. It is also 48.7% above the total five years ago. However, over the past ten years from the Top-10 only China and India showed growth exceeding global rates.

In 1997, China produced 108.9 mmt of crude steel. By 2002 this had risen to 182.2 mmt, an increase of 67.3%. In 2007, China produced 489.0 mmt of crude steel, an increase of 349.0% in just ten years. China’s share of world crude steel production has also increased exponentially. In 1997, China was already the largest steel producing country in the world, however it accounted for just 13.5% of production. In 2007, this share had risen to 36.4%, more than one third of all crude steel produced in the world.

Ten years ago India produced only 24.4 mmt of crude steel. By 2007, India's production has risen by 117.4% and with 53.1 mmt of crude steel India is fifth world's producer.

In 2007, the top three steel producing countries were China (489.0 mmt), Japan (120.2 mmt), and the USA (97.2 mmt). USA is the only country in the list to show negative production growth in 2007. It's production has fallen by 1.4% since 2006. Brazil has returned from tenth to ninth place in the list of the top ten steel producing countries owing to the fact that it's production has grown by 9.4%, second-best growth rate in Top-10.
