Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium
Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium Limited (Evraz Highveld) is an integrated mining, vanadium, iron and steel producer. It is South Africa's second-largest steel maker and the world's leading vanadium supplier.
Evraz Highveld is the primary producer of medium and heavy structural sections and thick plate in South Africa. Rolled products production in 2007 was as follows: 198,000 tonnes of plate, 209,000 tonnes of coil and 330,000 tonnes of sections. In 2007, steel products were sold predominantly in the domestic market and the remainder in niche markets globally.
Vanadium products are produced at its Vanchem plant, at SAJV (an incorporated Joint Venture in which Evraz Highveld holds 50 per cent) and Hochvanadium, a wholly owned subsidiary of Evraz Highveld. In 2007, Highveld produced 9.8 million kg of vanadium oxide, 8.7 million kg of ferrovanadium, and 66,000 tonnes of vanadium bearing slag.
Facilities
Iron Ore. The Mapochs Mine situated in the Roossenekal area in Mpumalanga provides titaniferous magnetite ore to the Vanchem plant and the Steelworks.
Vanadium. High grade vanadium pentoxide for the international market is produced by the Vanchem plant. Ferrovanadium is also produced for the local and export market by Vanchem.
Steel. The continuous casting plant consists of four machines : one for billets, two larger machines for blooms, and one for slabs. Steel products are rolled in Highveld’s universal structural mill, a semi-automatic combination installation.
The mill produces basic plate with a thickness of 5 to 155mm, maximum width to 2 650mm (2 750mm untrimmed) and length up to 13 000mm (10 000kg max). The basic coil is produced with a thickness between 3.0 to 16mm, a width from 1000 to 2000mm and maximum mass up to 27 tons.
Products
Vanadium. Vanadium bearing magnetite ore is converted into a variety of products:
- Vanadium oxides that are commonly traded and used to produce ferrovanadium, alloys and chemicals.
- Ferrovanadium (“FeV”) and ferrovanadium nitride (“FeVN”) from V2O3 used as an alloying element to steel, conferring both strength and toughness.
- Vanadium Chemicals used as pigments, dyes, corrosion inhibitors and catalysts in the petrochemical and sulphuric acid industries.
- Vanadium bearing slag used for internal consumption and sold to independent converters
Steel. Steel is converted into a variety of hot rolled steel products and continuously cast steel products, namely:
- Plate used in the construction industry for the fabrication of girders, support structures and bridges; and the fabrication industry for the manufacture of liquid storage facilities, including tanks, pressure vessels and boilers.
- Hot rolled coil used in the construction industry for cladding of buildings and bridges; the fabrication industry for production of lip-channels, c-channels and angles; the engineering industry and shipbuilding industry.
- Structural sections used in the construction industry for support and structural steel frameworks; and the transport industry for light gauge rail tracks, rail cars and truck and trailer manufacture.
- Billets and slabs used in the steelmaking industry for re-rolling into wire rods, fencing and reinforcing bar.
Evraz Highveld’s profile steel products are universal columns, parallel flanged beams, channels, angles, rounds, and billets.
Quality Control
All Evraz Highveld divisions are certified in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 and DIN EN ISO 14001:2004 management systems by TÜV Certification Body. In 2007 all divisions, with the exception of the main Steelworks, have attained certification to OHSAS 18001:1999.
Evraz Highveld also has been approved as a manufacturer for Steelmaking, Plates, Strip, Sections and Bars in accordance with the requirements of Lloyd’s Register.
History
In 1957, Minerals Engineering of Colorado opened a plant at Witbank designed to produce approximately 1.4 million kg of vanadium pentoxide annually. In 1959, Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited (“Anglo”) acquired a two-third share in Minerals Engineering. The Highveld Development Company Limited was established in 1960 to investigate the viability of processing the titaniferous magnetite ore for the production of liquid pig iron and vanadium bearing slag. Soon the company embarked on a programme to build an integrated iron and steelworks near Witbank.
The name of the company was changed to Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Limited (“Highveld”) in 1965, becoming the largest vanadium producer in the world.
In July 2006 Anglo disposed of 24.9% of its shareholding in Highveld to Evraz Group. Upon receiving regulatory approvals Evraz purchased a further 29.2% stake in Highveld from Anglo American in May 2007 followed by a mandatory general offer to Highveld’s minority shareholders.
After executing the option to acquire the remaining shares in Highveld from Credit Suisse in September 2007, Evraz currently owns 80.9% of the entire issued share capital of Highveld.
During 2007 the Corporation sold both its ferro-alloy divisions, namely Transalloys and Rand Carbide, as going concerns.
