Evraz Vitkovice Steel

Evraz Vítkovice Steel is a leading European manufacturer of rolled steel products located in Ostrava, Czech Republic. It is one of Europe’s top producers of heavy plates and is the only one producer in the Czech Republic. In 2007, it produced about 890,000 tonnes of steel and 917,000 tonnes of rolled products, comparing to 800.000 tonnes of steel and 860.000 tonnes of rolled products in 2006.

Facilities

Production facilities of Evraz Vítkovice Steel consist of a steel plant producing slabs, two rolling mills, including one plate rolling mill and one heavy section mill, and cut shapes production.

Steel plant. The steel plant comprises a secondary metallurgy shop equipped with degassing unit (ISSM), ladle furnace and continuous casting machine. The quality of all process is computer controlled. Installation of the ISSM system (Integrated System of Secondary Metallurgy, a modern two-caisson equipment for vacuum degassing, chemical heating, decarburization, desulphurization, removal of non-metallic inclusions, adjustment of chemical composition and thermal and chemical homogenization) at the steel plant enables to produce better quality and higher grade products.

Rolling mills. The rolling facilities include an operating plate mill and a heavy section mill. The 3.5 Four-High Plate Rolling Mill (Quarto) was founded in 1971 and modernised in 1999. The heavy section mill enables the rolling of steel sections and sheet piles.

Cut shape centre. The centre is equipped with flame cutting machines to manufacture cut shapes from plates.

Products

The main product mix consists of plates, sections, sheet piles and flame-cut shapes.

Quality control

Quality of management systems at Evraz Vítkovice Steel was first certified by TÜV in 1993, and its most recent ISO 9001:2000 certificate was issued by TÜV in 2005. Evraz Vitkovice Steel holds a number of product and quality certificates.

History

The history of Vitkovice Steel started with the first heat of ductile iron, tapped in Rudolf’s smelter, Vitkovice’s early predecessor, in 1830. As steel production was developing, the company built its own rolling mills. The predecessors of the currently operated mills were commissioned in 1911. The present company Vítkovice Steel, a. s., was established on March 7, 2000.
In January 2005, Osinek, a sole subsidiary of the National Property Fund of the Czech Republic, announced a tender for the sale of the Company and in July the same year Mastercroft Ltd. was announced the tender winner by the Czech government. In November 2005, the acquisition was completed and Vítkovice Steel became part of Evraz Group as Evraz Vítkovice Steel.
