- By 2006 more than 1.5 billion tonnes of iron ore were extracted in Kachkanarsky Ore Mining and Processing Enterprise.
NKMK
Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel plant is one of the five largest rail producers in the world. This integrated iron and steel plant is located in the city of Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo region. In 2007, NKMK produced 1.47 million tonnes of pig iron, 1.46 million tonnes of steel and 1.8 million tonnes of rolled products.
Facilities
NKMK is an integrated steel plant with an annual rolling capacity of 2 mln. tonnes. Its production facilities include a coke-chemical production plant, blast furnace facilities, steelmaking facilities with two continuous casters, a rail and structural mill, long products production and plate rolling mill.
NKMK has up-to-date machinery in the plant with a focus on rails as high value-added products.
Coke production. The coke-chemical production facilities at NKMK include a coal preparation shop, a coke shop with two coking batteries, two gas recovery shops, and a maintenance department. The annual capacity of the coke plant is around 830 thousand tonnes. The main products are the metallurgical and other coke grades as well as the coke oven gas and rectification by-products such as coal tar pitch, ammonium sulphate and carbon oil (benzol).
The gas produced by the coking ovens – about 45 thousand cubic meters per hour – is captured and recycled for heating the plant’s coking batteries and metallurgical furnaces.
Iron production. NKMK operates two blast furnaces, and in 2007 produced 1.47 million tonnes of pig iron, compared to 1.81 million tonnes in 2006. The decrease in coke production was attributable to the closure of the open hearth furnace.
Steel production. NKMK produces steel in two electric arc furnaces, each with 115 tonnes capacity, and operates ladle furnaces in the secondary refinement area. The shop is equipped with two continuous casting machines, each of a total capacity of 725 thousand tonnes per annum.
Following the modernising and refurbishing projects NKMK’s total steel melting production reaches almost 1.5 million tonnes per year (from the design capacity of 550 thousand tonnes). It is planned that the forthcoming installation of the vacuum degassing unit and other reconstruction projects at the plant's steel-melting facilities will increase the production to 1.9 mln tonnes per year. The programme is expected to be completed in 2011.
Rolling facilities. NKMK operates a rail and structural shop, a plate shop and a section shop.
The installed capacity of the rail and structural shop is 1.3 mln tonnes per year. The mill consumes the steel primarily produced in the plant's electric arc furnaces through the two continuous casting machines. NKMK conducts thermal treatment of rails in order to further improve the quality of the final product.
The annual capacity of the plate shop is about 500 thousand tonnes. The mill produces the plate with a thickness from 5 to 25 millimetres, from 1000 to 1800 millimetres in width, from 2000 to 6000 millimetres in length.
The section shop includes Mill 450 with annual capacity around 180 thousand tonnes producing rounds, balls, rolled rounds, plough strip, contra-angles etc.
NKMK’s rolling facilities also include a rail fasteners mill of 72 thousand tonnes capacity (producing fasteners, covers, staples etc.) and two ball-rolling mills of total capacity at 85 thousand tonnes.
Products
NKMK is the leading rail producer in the Russian Federation, producing a full range of rails. NKMK together with another Evraz subsidiary NTMK (Nizhny Tagil) are the key rail suppliers to Russian Railways. NKMK's output of rails accounts for approximately two-thirds of the Russian rail production.
A special flaw location technology is used at NKMK to guarantee the full compliance of the produced rails with the international quality standards.
In addition to rails, NKMK produces significant quantities of pig iron, plates and other semi-finished products.
Quality control
The quality management system covers all stages of NKMK's production process. The Quality Policy of the plant focuses on the personnel involvement in the quality management, product improvement and cost control.
NKMK production of rails, rail fasteners and sections is certified in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 management system by TÜV Certification Body. All railway products produced at NKMK are also certified by the Russian Railways certification system.
Among others, NKMK holds a certificate of the Russian River Register for plate production for shipbuilding with a thickness between 5 and 25 millimetres.
History
Kuznetsk Steel Mill (KMK) was built in the 1930s as part of intensive industrial development of the Russian Federation and soon became one of the largest iron and steel plants in the country.
In the early 1990s, KMK was privatised and transformed into a joint stock company under Russian law. Further on, its assets were consolidated as Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant (NKMK) in 2003.
Today, NKMK is a part of Evraz Group. As of 31 December 2007 Evraz’s effective interest in NKMK amounted to 100.00%.
