VGOK
In 2008, VGOK mined 4.3 million tonnes of iron and produced 2.4 million tonnes of sinter.
History
Vysokogorsky iron mines play a key role in Russia’s metallurgy industry. Vast deposits of magnetic ore have been mined there since 1721. In the beginning of the Soviet period, the plant began an intensive reconstruction and comprehensive mechanisation.
During World War II, the Urals became a strategically important region: Almost all Soviet metallurgy production was concentrated in the region, and VGOK became one of the major providers of the raw material.
In the 1990s, a crisis struck the mining industry, and VGOK suffered from stagnation, however its efforts to reduce expenses and increase production quality helped the plant to not only keep its share of traditional markets but to gain new customers as well. During the late 1990s, the national market became much more intense, which resulted in increasing production volumes and growing demand for VGOK’s output.
Today, VGOK encompasses 4 active mines. Besides ore mines, VGOK includes a number of sintering factories, limestone, marble and dunite mines and processing units.
