History
Kachkanar Mountain is the only source of vanadium ore in Russia. A geological survey of the ore deposit began in the early 1930s. In 1956, the Soviet government resolved to construct a mining and processing plant on Kachkanar. The plant was intended to provide raw materials for Nizhny Tagil Steel Plant, but over time, the delivery zone for vanadium ore covered the whole of Ural region.
At present it develops the Gusevogorskoye ore deposit. In October 2006, KGOK became the winner in an auction to buy a licence to develop the Sobstvenno-Kachkanarskoye magnetite and titanium deposit in Central Ural. The Sobstvenno-Kachkanarskoye deposit is located in the Sverdlovsk Region next to the Gusevogorskoye ore deposit and has reserves of 3.3 billion tonnes of ore with estimated iron content of 16%. The licence for developing the deposit is valid for a period of 25 years.
